We wanted everybody to know about a yard sale coming up to benefit the Upper Rio Grande Animal Society. On Saturday May 12, 2012 at the Dell’s Insurance Parking Lot come down and show your support of homeless animals!! Several, and we mean several, local businesses have made donations to this yard sale. There will also be pet adoptions, ice cold drinks, scrumptious baked goods and delicious breakfast burritos! This event is sponsored by Dell’s Insurance Agency, Inc. and ALL proceeds go to the Upper Rio Grande Animal Society.
We have wonderful news for those of you on the go. We all lead crazy, busy lives and sometimes find it hard to listen to our favorite radio station (The Zebra!!!). If you have a smartphone you can now find The Zebra blasting from it! All you’ll need to do is download the free app called TuneIn. You can find it on your phones market! Then you will be able to keep up with The Zebra, right from your smartphone!
The Help Keep Milagros on Main Street project has been going on for two months now. The wider community has come together to raise more than $12,000 dollars at the hands of over 200 donors, and the project is not over yet. We have a week left before the grant to the Colorado State Historical Society is due and we need your help to reach our goal of 250 donors to demonstrate community support for the grant. Milagros is applying for a grant to help cover some of the cost of the building, but we still need to raise more. Our goal is to fundraise $35,000 to offset the remaining cost for the space.

A packed crowd enjoyed a sold-out house concert from Sarah Siskind featuring Travis Book last April, and now the duo returns as part of a two night mini-festival of rootsy, acoustic-based Americana and folk music sponsored by the Alamosa Live Music Association (ALMA) at Vistas restaurant, atop the Adams State College stadium, during the end of March. Attendees can save by contributing for tickets to both shows.
Returning with their pop-folk tinged with the influence of Appalachian mountain music to kick off the festivities on Fri., March 30 is Driftwood Fire. The band is a rarity in today’s media mad world – an organically creative female duo whose vivid songwriting and prodigious playing skills display uncommon artistry. The duo’s captivating live performances have propelled them to the stages of the National Women’s Music Festival, the Rocky Mountain Folks Fest and the Falcon Ridge Emerging Artists showcase, as well as winning them Suggested Artists status in VH-1’s Song of the Year contest. Tickets for this show are $8 ALMA members, $10 for non-members, and $5 for students, seniors, full-time volunteers and active duty military.
“The best female singer/songwriter in America today,” and Nashville’s “best new voice,” are among the praises Sarah Siskind has earned. Her compositions are grounded in folk and Appalachian roots, but have also been classified as Americana and alternative. Artists such as Randy Travis, Alison Krauss and Bon Iver have covered her tunes, and bluegrass/folk legend Tim O’Brien has called her a rare talent. NPR’s Song Of The Day has highlighted Siskind, and Bonnie Raitt called her previous album “a masterpiece.” Bassist for the Grammy-nominated Infamous Stringdusters and Siskind’s husband Travis Book will join her. Tickets are $10 for ALMA members, $12 for non-members and $6 for students, seniors, full-time volunteers and active duty military.

Join La Puente in the 2012 San Luis Valley CROP Walk—a community event to raise awareness of global hunger issues. We walk in solidarity with those around the world who must walk several miles a day to find food and water. CROP Walk is also a fundraiser for the Food Bank Network of the San Luis Valley and a global organization that devotes their time to combating world poverty and hunger. Start a team and fundraise or simply join us for the walk on Sunday, April 22nd. Registration begins at 2pm at the First Christian Church on State Avenue, a free barbeque to follow the walk for all participants and registration is free. Adams State College Theatre announces that tickets go on sale Monday, March 19th for two original theatre productions by American Centaur featuring Alamosa native Cory Antiel. American Centaur is a New York based theatre company that creates live theatre for the internet generation by re-interpreting classical texts into raucous, comical new works. “K5”, based on Shakespeare’s Henry V, will be performed on March 22 at 7:30 p.m. and “Death of American Centaur”, adapted from Death of a Salesman, will be presented on March 23 at 7:30 p.m. Call 587-8499 for tickets.
The Rio Grande County 2012 Health Fair will be held at the Del Norte Elementary School Mini-Gym, 10th and Spruce Street, from 7-11 AM on Saturday, March 31st. Testing will be done for diabetes, prostrate cancer, anemia, and osteoporosis among others. Charges for these tests are reduced from what you’d pay through your regular care provider. Many free health-screening exams will be available for vision, hearing, lung function, breast and prostate exams, skin lesion and many more. The Zebra wants to make a trade… Here’s the deal. Bring us a zebra and we’ll give you a free mouse (pad) in exchange. What kind of zebra? Well, how about something with a zebra pattern on it? Or maybe a picture of a zebra, or a stuffed toy zebra? Use your imagination. Just drop off your zebra at our new studio location at 292 Santa Fe Avenue in Alamosa (across from the Rio Grande Inn) during our normal business hours of 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday (we take a lunch from noon to 1) and we’ll give you a cool mouse pad.
